Environmental Adventures

Set within the boundaries of the New Forest National Park, Avon Tyrrell boasts a wide variety of habitats (including Lakes, Wetland, Heathland, Coniferous and mixed woodland) as well as direct access onto the open New Forest.  We have abundant wildlife around site, including Fallow deer, Tawny owls, Grass snakes, Sand lizards and 7 different species of bat to name just a few.  In addition, new for 2008 is a strawbale, ‘eco–classroom’ base for our environmental activities.

So whether you are young or old, visiting for a day or a week we have something to suit your needs.

Instructed Activities

All activities are led by qualified and experienced leaders.  Maximum group numbers are 16 or 35 people per session. We require an adult leader/teacher presence at all activity sessions and an adult to pupil ratio in line with council recommendations.

Key stage one

How does my garden grow? - Supports QCA science 1b, 2b, 2c Discover the exciting world of plants and how they grow.  You’ll get to explore all over the Avon Tyrrell grounds in search of different plants.

What’s in the woods? - Supports QCA science 2b, 2c Explore the unique Avon Tyrrell grounds in search of all the different plants, mammals, minibeasts, reptiles and amphibians that live here.  We’ll also discover the secrets of the tracks and signs that they leave behind.

Global Guardians - Supports QCA citizenship 02, 06 and geography unit 17
Discover the secrets of sustainable living and how we can help our local environment.  This is a predominantly indoor session.

Key stage two

Secret Seeds & Powerful Plants - Supports QCA science 3b, 4b, 5b
Discover the secret world of plants, how they grow, where they live, how they reproduce and disperse their seeds.

Habitats & Interactions - Supports QCA science 4b, 6a Investigate the different habitats around Avon Tyrrell and the wildlife that makes them their home.  Discover how they all depend on one another and link together in food chains and webs.
   
Global Guardians - Supports QCA citizenship 02, 06 and geography 08
Discover the secrets of sustainable living and how we can help our local environment.  (This is a predominantly indoor session).

Residential Visitors:
£180 for approx 5.5 hours of activities for up to 35 people.
Day Visitors:
£170 for approx 4 hours of activities for up to 35 people.

Hour and a Half Sessions

A mix and match menu from which you can choose sessions to make your perfect environmental day.  These sessions are based on approximately 1hour 20mins teaching with a 10 minute change over and introduction.  Where appropriate sessions can focus on either the key stage 1 or 2 units, they all have an underlying link to sustainability and citizenship.

Animal Tracks & Signs - Supports QCA Science 2b, 2c, 4b. Discover what wildlife lives at Avon Tyrrell; become a detective and search the site looking
for the trails that they leave behind.

Mini-beasts - Supports QCA Science 2b, 2c, 4b, 6a (April – September)
Explore some of Avon Tyrrell’s many different habitats in the search of invertebrate life. 

Fabulous Food Chains – Supports QCA science 4b, 6a. Investigate the world of predators and their prey, discover how they interact and are all linked together in food chains.

Plant Power - Supports QCA Science 1b, 2b, 2c, 3b, 4b, 5b. Explore the exciting world of plants, how they grow and reproduce.  You’ll get to explore all over the Avon Tyrrell grounds in search of some different plants.

Radical Recycling – Supports QCA Citizenship 02 and Geography unit 08, 17
Explore the issues of waste and landfill and discover the sustainable wonders of Recycling and make your own recycled paper (Indoor session).

Discovery Walk - Supports QCA Art 2b. Join us for a sensory journey through the natural environment of Avon Tyrrell, fun for all ages!

Art in the Environment - Supports QCA Art 1b, 1c, 2b, 4c. A hands on session of creativity and imagination in the great outdoors using nature for bothinspiration and resources.

Shelter Building - Supports QCA DET 6a. Discover one of the greatest secrets to survival, creating a shelter out of natural materials.  This activity is a particularly good team building exercise.

Soils & Vegetation – Supports QCA Science 3d. Mud, mud, glorious mud!!  Delve into the amazing world of soil, how it is created and whatdifference it can make to a habitat.

Residential Visitors:
£55 for 1.5 hour sessions for up to 35 people.
Day Visitors:
£60 for 1.5 hour sessions for up to 35 people.

Night/Twilight Walk        
Experience Avon Tyrrell at dusk or in darkness through exciting night activities.
 
Pond Dipping - Supports QCA Science 2b, 2c, 4b, 5b, 6a (April – September)
Discover the fascinating aquatic creatures that live within Avon Tyrrell.
 
Small Mammal Trapping - Supports QCA science 2b, 2c, 4b, 6a (April – September) Investigate small woodland mammals by setting out humane traps in the evening and examining and releasing the animals the following morning. Requires 2 sessions

Residential Visitors:
£55 for 1.5 hour sessions for up to 16 people.
Day Visitors:
£60 for 1.5 hour sessions for up to 16 people.

New Forest Study Immerse yourself in The New Forest environment, combining Heathland, conifer and mixed woodland habitats. Ideal for studying recreation, commercial and conservation land use issues. 

Guided Walks Discover some of the hidden secrets of the New Forest on one of our guided walks out onto the open New Forest.  On route we will keep our eyes open for the abundant local wildlife and find out about the unique history of the area.  There walks can be tailored to you needs to be as gentle or active as you  require.

Residential Visitors:
£110 for 3 hour sessions for up to 16 people.
Day Visitors:
£120 for 3 hour sessions for up to 16 people.

Woodland Survival Experience The adventure experience for everyone aged 8 years and over. The Woodland Survival Experience promotes the development of self esteem, self confidence, mutual trust and understanding whilst instilling a deeper appreciation of our natural environment and its
sustainability. Activities include building your own shelter, Kelly kettles, friction fire lighting, natural cordage and foraging for wild food.  These sessions generally last for 3 or 6 hours, but 1.5 hour Firelighting sessions are also available.

Residential Visitors:
£100 for 3 hours for up to 6 people £180 for 7 to 12 people
£180 for 6 hours for up to 6 people, £340 for 7 to 12 people
Day Visitors:
£110 for 3 hours for up to 6 people, £200 for 7 to 12 people
£200 for 6 hours for up to 6 people, £380 for 7 to 12 people
