Habitats and Interactions

Key Stage 2

This is a full day session which includes mini beasts and fabulous food chains.  An interactive day that explores a variety of habitats, gradually building up the idea of food chains and webs by exploring the different animals and plants that live in each habitat. Through activities and environmental games, the groups are gradually introduced to predators and prey, energy transfer and survival, all with an emphasis on the diversities and fragility of the food web.

The morning is spent exploring a number of different habitats both at Avon Tyrrell and out on the New Forest (Heathland, Woodland & Freshwater Lake).  At each location the group are allowed to explore, look for and identify (using a key) the organisms that live there.  They will also investigate and compare the characteristics of the habitats.

The afternoon is spent looking into food chains and webs and the adaptations that predator and prey species may have.  Throughout the day they will also take part in specially designed environmental games that demonstrate survival strategies and energy transfer.

Key Stage 3

This day enables groups to explore contrasting habitats (Heathland, Woodland & Freshwater Lake) and the variety of wildlife that can be found within them.  Within each habitat, the group will establish characteristic conditions and investigate what plants and animals they would expect to find living there.  Having visited all three habitats the group will be encouraged to compare and contrast the information that they have collected.

The afternoon is spent looking at feeding relationships within a habitat and the adaptations that predator and prey species have. Using specially designed environmental games/activities the group will explore survival strategies and energy transfer.  Having established the principles of feeding relationships, the group will create food chains and webs, exploring the numerous roles within them.
