Night Walk

A unique opportunity to explore Avon Tyrrell during the hours of darkness, discover some of the nocturnal creatures that live here, the stories connected with Avon Tyrrell House and test your night vision with some of our amazing light tricks.

This session varies according to the time of year due to sunset times and hibernating wildlife.  All sessions follow a similar pattern, but will have a different emphasis:

Spring – Summer: Wildlife is more abundant during these months, using our bat detectors we’ll search for some of the many species that roost at Avon Tyrrell, enabling us to listen to their echolocation as they hunt in the darkness.  We’ll also be on the look out for tawny owls that nest within our grounds.

Around mid- summer: Days are at their longest and this is when twilight walks often take place.  During these sessions, we’ll discover some of Avon Tyrrell’s secrets as well as be on the look out for all the wildlife that comes out at dusk.  We’ll often end the session by seeing if we can catch any of the ‘early’ rising Daubentons bats down by the lake.

Winter:  Our Bats are in hibernation over winter, but our Tawny Owls are still around and making lots of noise!  Winter sessions take place in full darkness which allows us to really develop night vision and get fantastic results from our light tricks.  We’ll discover some of Avon Tyrrell’s hidden secrets and explore the usually hidden world of Avon Tyrrell in darkness (no torches allowed!).

Session Time – 90 minutes

Group Size – Maximum of 16

Our Recommendations

Sensible clothes and shoes should be worn during this activity.

We request that group members do not bring there own torches with them on night walks, to aid their eyes adjustment to the dark and use of night vision.  The instructor will have a torch with them at all times in case of an emergency.
