New Forest disability adventure weekend benefits 70 people thanks to funding from ‘Give It Away’

  • £5,000 has kindly been donated by Charlotte Grobien, Founder of Give it Away, to subsidise a disability weekend for families from across the south at Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Centre

On 8Th June UK Youth’s outdoor centre, Avon Tyrrell, offered families with disabled children a unique weekend of activity, thanks to funding from Charlotte Grobien and Give It Away. The kind donation allowed 70 people in the New Forest to enjoy a short break and experience outdoor activities.

The weekend allowed families a rare opportunity to take part in Avon Tyrrell’s programme of fully accessible adventure activities including climbing, high ropes, archery, kayaking and mountain biking and explore the site and spot the wildlife at twilight. One of the most important aspects of the weekend was bonding and sharing experiences with other families, and making friends around the campfire.

Abigail Brookes, Guest Services Manager at Avon Tyrrell says “This inclusion weekend provided families that have a child with a disability with an opportunity to enjoy a family break away. As well as having the chance to meet new friends, we offered a supportive platform that allows all young people to experience, learn and develop in a comfortable and exciting environment. Our staff are experts in dealing with a variety of accessibility needs and will always go the extra mile to support them, ensuring the whole family benefits from these new experiences.”

It is opportunities like these that help young people develop, gain confidence and achieve something new, whilst sharing experiences with their siblings. It really does mean a lot to them. One of the families said “We had a fantastic time - thank you so much! These weekends are such important respite for our whole family - it is one time we can relax as we know we are in a supportive and understanding environment. It's lovely to meet other families who are in a similar situation and the instructors are simply brilliant!

Avon Tyrrell is a fully accessible centre. With a range of specialised equipment and facilities, the centre is well managed.  Staff are dedicated and always on hand to offer friendly support and advice every step of the way.

David Watts, Director of Avon Tyrrell says “We are extremely lucky as a charity to not only have such an incredible location to host these events, but to also receive the funding from Charlotte Grobien and ‘Give it Away’ to support these families. Our mission is to provide new opportunities for everyone to experience, learn and develop and it is weekends like these and the accessibility that we have that ensures everyone can be involved and enjoy these opportunities.”
