Off The Track Impact Report
Throughout the months of March to May 2022, Avon Tyrrell had 233 young people successfully engage in our funded programme 'Off the Track, On the Path to Success'. This programme was funded by South Western Railway service and aimed at young people within a 20 mile radius of a SWR station.
Off the Track, on the Path to success was a practical programme that used outdoor learning to develop young peoples general understanding of risk and specifically the dangers associated with railways.
Off The Track, On the Path to Success took place over a three day residential and through an engage, educate and prevent approach, improved young peoples understanding of risk and empowered them to become leaders who can raise awareness around railway safety and deter or inspire others.
How did we achieve this?
Experience: The programmed offered a selection of adventure activities, engaging young people to bring learning to life.
Learn: Our experienced facilitators delivered a progressive programme, with plenty of touch points to check and embed understanding. The outdoor sessions were designed around creating an understanding of perceived risk and actual risk.
Develop: The programme included leadership workshops that helped empower individuals to develop their leadership skills, so that they can utilise these skills within their community to raise awareness of rail safety.
What was the impact?
81% of young people found the programme excellent or very good, with one young person stating 'I learnt that I can push myself to my limits and try new things'.
Over the course of this programme, young people developed their knowledge of rail safety and the threat of trespassing, to become leaders in rail safety. At the end of the programme, 84% of young people will challenge others when they are not being safe around railways.
