Chief Instructor – Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Centre

Are you an excellent team manager with a passion for Outdoor Learning and inspiring others?

Situated in The New Forest National Park on the beautiful South Coast, UK Youth are looking for an experienced, passionate and enthusiastic Chief Instructor.

Excellent communication, leadership and organisational skills are essential in this role, as you will be responsible for day to day management of the activities department, ensuring we deliver high quality outdoor learning experiences to a variety of groups, to meet their visit aims and objectives.

You will have a proven track record of managing teams, a good knowledge of the outdoor industry and safety management procedures, and a broad range of qualifications to underpin your knowledge.

You will be a strong team leader and role model, ensuring levels of team morale are maintained throughout the year and staff are well supported to achieve their full potential.

As a key member of the Avon Tyrrell management team, you will also be required to work in collaboration with senior staff across the centre to support our mission and charitable objectives, building and maintaining our reputation as a quality outdoor learning provider and supporting opportunities for as many young people as possible to Experience, Learn and Develop and build bright futures.

Salary: £24,000-£28,000 per annum depending on experience

Hours: Full Time (42.5 hrs a week)

Essential Qualifications:

A minimum of three from the following qualifications:

  • UKCC BCU L2 or above
  • SPA or CWA Assessed 
  • ERCA High Ropes Instructor
  • MIAS, Archery GB, ML or equivalent


You should also have a minimum of three years instructing experience, a good understanding of soft skills and the vital role this plays in the delivery of high quality experiences, and the ability to build and maintain relationships and rapport with staff and guests.

You should be a strong team player, as well as someone who is able to work independently and inspire others.
