Lead Instructor

Who We are Looking For:
A Lead Instructor
Are you passionate about outdoor learning and ready to take the next step in your career? Avon Tyrrell, UK Youth’s nationally respected outdoor centre, is looking for a motivated Lead Instructor to join our dynamic and supportive team.
As a Lead Instructor, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality, inclusive outdoor learning experiences for a truly diverse range of groups, from schools and youth organisations to community groups and specialist programmes. No two days are the same, and you’ll have the chance to make a meaningful impact on young people from all backgrounds.
This is an excellent opportunity if you are:
- Looking for a first step into senior responsibilities, or
- Wanting to consolidate your existing experience in a larger, well-established centre.
As a lead instructor you will get to help shape the daily delivery of programmes, support and guide less experienced staff, and contribute to maintaining our reputation for excellence, all while continuing to grow your own skills and confidence.
Requirements
Candidates should hold:
- A valid first aid certificate
- BC Coach Award or minimum BC Paddle sport Instructor
- Archery GB instructor
- ERCA Traditional Instructor
- a recognised walking, climbing, biking or environmental qualification
Experience
Candidates should have:
- Previous experience (18mths +) of working in an outdoor centre
- Experience of delivering high standards of outdoor learning and customer care.

Deputy Cook

Hours: Full Time Salary: £28,158 a year Location: On Site – Avon Tyrrell Outdoor CentreWe are looking for a friendly, motivated cook with experience in a commercial kitchen, who loves creating home-cooked meals and memorable experiences for young people.
At Avon Tyrrell, UK Youth’s flagship outdoor learning centre, every day is an opportunity to make a real difference to young people. Whether they are here for adventure, learning, or building confidence, your food will be a key part of their experience, fuelling their energy, creating memories, and helping them feel welcome, safe, and supported.
As part of our small, friendly, and dedicated catering team, you will play a vital role in shaping a positive environment for thousands of young people each year, helping to create healthy, tasty meals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and cook a variety of dishes in line with established recipes and menu specifications.
- Ensure all food is prepared safely and in accordance with food hygiene regulations.
- Supervise and guide kitchen staff during meal preparation, providing support as required.
- Maintain a clean, organised kitchen and ensure all equipment is cleaned and stored properly.
- Deliver excellent customer service, interacting professionally and courteously with guests.
What you can expect

A healthy work–life balance, please note:
- Some weekend working is required.
- Some split shifts are required.
- Evening shifts typically finish no later than 7:30pm.
- We have a two-week closure period over Christmas, giving you guaranteed time off during the festive break.
- Annual leave as standard is 35 days per annum (includes bank holidays)

What we’re looking for:
- Proven experience ideally in a similar role or setting.
- Strong knowledge of kitchen operations, food preparation, and awareness of allergens.
- A valid catering qualification and up-to-date food hygiene certificate.
- Excellent customer care, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Understanding and empathy towards the needs of young people.
Additional Requirements:
- Two satisfactory references.
- Enhanced DBS check.
- Proof of the right to work in the UK.

Join our apprenticeships
An Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Learning Apprenticeship is a 2-year programme, and is a great way to start a career in the outdoor industry.
The paid programme is suitable for people aged 18+ and has the option for participants to live on-site. Throughout the two-years, you will gain skills, qualifications, and the confidence to run a variety of outdoor activities.

We have lots of opportunities at Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Centre, we welcome individuals for a few hours, corporate groups for a day or regular committed hours.
