Apprenticeships at Avon Tyrrell

Our seven apprentices have had a busy year already-  with some graduating the course and others already gaining qualifications in activities. We’re excited to also have two beginning their apprenticeship journey.

There’s so much that happens throughout the year for our apprentices from shadowing instructors to trying out activities for the first time to being signed off having passed their qualifications- we thought you’d like to know everything that they’ve been up to recently!

Apprentice graduates of 2022

At the end of last year, we saw three of our apprentices (Logan, Maya and Paige) all graduate, passing their EPA's (apprentice end point assessments) and becoming qualified outdoor learning instructors.

We're so proud of everything they've achieved, they're great additions to the team and we look forward to them taking on the challenge of being our outdoor learning instructors.

Team bonding at Pen Y Fan

Team bonding time is incredibly important in outdoor learning, and we believe the same with our apprentices. That’s why senior outdoor learning instructor Jake took them away to the Brecon Beacons for a week of fun-filled activities to help develop key skills and experiences.  They walked up Pen Y Fan, enjoyed mountain biking in the Forest of Dean, and tried out skills ready for their MIAS (Mountainbike Instructor Award Scheme).

It was a great chance for them to get away and have some fun to celebrate the end of their first year, and benefited from a great training opportunity in the wilds of the Welsh National park.

Apprentice awards

Last month saw UK Youth’s annual get-together - a chance to connect, learn and be inspired. The celebrations also included our award ceremony where we could celebrate members of the wider team for their exceptional work and dedication to UK Youth. We are so proud of:

  •  Nathan won the apprentice of the year award. The nomination detailed how he showed the most commitment, passion, and determination to his own personal development, and to the needs of the young people we work with.
  • Maya won the ‘Acorn Award’ for making the biggest journey and overcoming significant barriers as part of their apprenticeship journey with us.
Training throughout 2022

The most important part of 2022 – was training! Our apprentices have been shadowing instructors, taking part in external courses for MIAS and ERCA as well as learning vital skills, helping them to become outstanding outdoor learning instructors. They’ve learnt how essential these skills are when inspiring great outdoor learning with our young people. They know the benefit of outdoor learning on a young person’s personal, social and educational development, improved health and well-being and environmental awareness.

We can’t wait to see everything that they achieve in 2023 and we also look forward to welcoming a new group of apprentices to our leading apprenticeship scheme. Want to learn more about outdoor learning apprenticeships at Avon Tyrrell?
