With two Orienteering courses at Avon Tyrrell, orienteering will introduce some practical map reading skills so you can locate various points within the grounds.

Orienteering is a great way to explore the grounds and discover new things. You will need to interpret your map and communicate well together to make decisions in order to find all points as quickly as possible.

You will have access to both courses and receive a self-guided Orienteering pack which includes; a briefing sheet for teachers and leaders to help you explain Orienteering to your group, a timing sheet to allow you to log teams in and out, 10 blank answer sheets, 10 blank maps, 1 map of Course A, 1 map of Course B and of course a master answer sheet.

Course A: Avoids all ponds and lakes and takes place around inside the grounds at Avon Tyrrell.

Duration: Approx. 40 minutes

Course B: Is longer and is primarily around the perimeter of site, but please note you will come into proximity with water.

Duration: Approx. 60 minutes

Ratios: Maximum of 32

Groups running at one time: 4

Recommendations:

  • If using Course B, we recommend at least two leaders run this session. One of whom should remain at the start/finish point. The other should position them self behind our large lake to monitor their group when in close proximity to water.
  • If you are from Hampshire, you will need a minimum of Hampshire County Council Open Country Leader award.

Accessible:  Our site depending on recent weather conditions can have large sections of uneven/muddy ground, discussion beforehand can help establish whether individual needs can be accommodated using either our Boma or bubble chair.

Extras: Good Introductory Activity / Exploration Activity
