The Prince's Trust Residential Programme

‘Team’ is a 12-week personal development programme aimed at 16-25 year olds who are not in education, employment or training to help them to gain new skills, take a qualification and meet new people.

To enable the young people to face their fears, develop confidence and bond together as a team, the young people complete a residential week away in week 2 or 3 of the programme.

The programme aims to help young people develop the skills, experiences, and confidence they need to progress toward positive outcomes.

‘You’ll spend this week away – trying new things and learning how to work with others. This gives you a chance to break away from your current situation – trying canoeing, climbing, raft-building and much more’.

The outdoor learning team are fully qualified to support your Princes Trust teams through the residential week of their programme, focusing on individual teams’ objectives and needs as well as Princes Trust guidelines and aims to ensure everyone gets the most out of it.

This week includes outdoor activities on a large scale. The residential week promotes team building and problem-solving skills through a structured learning experience away from the local community in residential accommodation. This week aims to improve self-confidence and provide the opportunity to take responsibility as a leader in some activities.

The residential should lay the foundations for the rest of the programme and key features of the residential week are:

Team members are empowered to take and then test their own decisions.
The lessons being learned during the week are linked into the preparation for and planning of the community project.
To understand and put into practice the principles of teamwork, problem solving, communication and leadership
To build confidence and a sense of responsibility to others
To establish mutual trust and respect between individual team members and between them and Prince’s Trust staff

Each day, outdoor activities will be completed which will enable learners to develop teamwork, leadership, communication and problem-solving skills. Suitable activities include high ropes, low ropes, abseiling, canoeing, archery, orienteering etc.

The program is designed to initially build trust and cooperation within the team then introduce more personal and team challenges as the week goes on. There will be one instructor with the group for the whole residential. This instructor will be able to ‘tweak’ the program based on the needs of the group.

The first afternoon/ evening (depending when they arrive) will be setting the scene for the week. The evening will be used to set aims and create a behaviour and expectations ‘contract’. The contract will be created by the group with support from the instructor, written down, signed and put up in their accommodation common area as a reminder for their visit. Both individual and team aims will also be displayed and these can then be referred to during the week.

Each day will start with a morning meeting (MM) facilitated by the instructor running the program. The aim for this meeting is to set the group up for the day, check how everyone is feeling and run through what they will be doing. It can also be used for talking through any issues within the group, allowing the participants to get things out in the open so they can be dealt with before the day starts.

They will take part in a scenario based activity day (fission & fusion) which will incorporate a range of activities to support their team working and self-reflection.

A successful conclusion to the week is celebrated with a presentation and review session, including all persons who have been involved with the residential.
